Rhetorica Update

Just FYI: I've entered a bit of a blogging slow-down. Not on purpose. It's just working out that way as I 1) write my conference paper (more on this soon) and 2) work on this whole journalistic intention thing.

Rhetorica Update

I forgot to post the napping cat photo that indicates a blogging break. I spent last week visiting family. I'm back to work today. I expect to be back to blogging almost immediately. I'll be busy the next few weeks preparing a conference paper for the International Society for the Study of European Ideas. I'll be attending the conference in Helsinki in late July.

Rhetorica Update

Summer is a good time to do house cleaning around the Rhetorica Network. For example, I'm updating links and fixing links. I've added a link to my blog on the Springfield News-Leader site (holler if you have any problem getting there). Rhetorica continues to function well, so I'm not planning any software or design updates. I have, however, implemented a Wordpress test blog here. I may cross post a few things just to play with it. You won't find any new or unique content there.

Next semester I'll be teaching two sections of Media Ethics and one section of Introduction to Journalism--my two favorite classes. I've deleted the blogs for both--no more Golden Mean, no more Bang It Out! For intro, I'll have the students start their own blogs. This will allow them to do more with the form; I'll be asking them to do more with it.

I had been using The Golden Mean as dump site for reading response. That's just not an effective use of blogging. So they get to hand in their weekly papers on paper from now on. I am, however, considering creating a media ethics Drupal site at MSU--something open to all MJF students (ethics is required for all our majors). More details as I dream them up. If you have any suggestions, drop me a line (which you can do on Facebook if you like--just add me as a friend).

Rhetorica Update

It's finals week at MSU, and that's why it's been quite here on Rhetorica. The last week of classes is busy. Finals week is busier. By Thursday afternoon, however, I'll be looking for something to do :-)

See you then...

Rhetorica Update

Moving on... Yes, I do intend to cover the nomination campaign. I've simply been busy with other matters lately (as in the past year). For example:

I finished an essay with co-writers Doug McGill and Jeremy Iggers for the Journal of Mass Media Ethics (JMME). You'll find it in the current issue (Vol. 22 Iss. 4). It's part of a special topics issue: "Who is a journalist"? Our essay concerns McGill's coverage of the Anuak genocide in Ethiopia, entitled Death in Gambella: What Many Heard, What One Blogger Saw, And Why the Professional Media Ignored It.

I recently finished another essay on one of my favorite topics--coverage of the pre-primary process in presidential nomination campaigns, entitled Tell a Different Story: How the News Media Ought to Cover the Pre-primary Presidential Campaign. It will appear in Media Ethics soon.

JMME has accepted my essay about Daniel Okrent, entitled Ethics and Ethos: Writing an Effective Newspaper Ombudsman Position. In it I examine the subject position Okrent created, how he created it, and what it all means for ombudsmen who wish to assert moral authority in journalism. It's slated for publication in late 2008.

And I've mentioned a couple of times recently the book chapter I'm writing about bias in communication.

Further, I'm working on two studies with a colleague in the psychology department. More on that later. BTW, if you'd like a hint at what we're up to (and if you would like to do our quick-'n-easy online exercise and survey), send e-mail to dr.cline # rhetorica # net. I'll send you the URL.

Rhetorica Update

Last week was mid-term, so I was busy giving exams.

I'm finishing an essay this week--another iteration of my tell-a-different-story shtick. More on this later.

And we're off for fall break beginning Thursday, so there won't be much to talk about regarding my Introduction to Journalism class this week (mostly going over the exam).

My plan is to catch up on blogging during the break.

Rhetorica Update

The fall semester begins in two weeks. I've been preparing my classes and having fun with my family. So the past few weeks have been an unannounced blogging slow-down. Things will pick up around here soon.

I announced two blog projects in the last two posts: 1) I'll be blogging specifically about my Introduction to Journalism class, taking a critical look at the current state of what it is I'm teaching, and 2) I'll also be taking a close look at selected campaign stories and suggesting ways that journalists could/should tell a different story.
