Behind 2004’s “Dewey Beats Truman”

Remember when the New York Post ran a front page "exclusive" reporting that Sen. John Kerry picked Rep. Dick Gephardt as his running mate in 2004?

The New York Times reports "a former gossip reporter at the paper, Ian Spiegelman, claims the paper was duped by Democrats, saying in a statement that the bum tip was given to Lachlan Murdoch, then the publisher of The Post. The publisher, in turn, ordered Col Allan, the editor in chief, to run the article."

Said Spiegelman: "Everyone at The Post, including Col Allan and his top deputies, knew the story had been planted with Lachlan by the Democratic National Committee to make him, and The Post, appear foolish on a national level."

Earlier: Murdoch was source for exclusive.
