Sen. Barack Obama sharply attacked the Rev. Jeremiah Wright and his comments from yesterday, “a far sharper disavowal than he gave in
Philadelphia last month,” according to The Politico.
Said Obama: “The person that I saw yesterday was not the person that I met 20 years
ago. His comments were not only divisive and destructive,
but I believe that they end up giving comfort to those who prey on
hate, and I believe that they do not portray accurately the perspective
of the black church.”
Some quick reactions:
Andrew Sullivan: “No one will ever be able to say that Obama threw his father-figure and
pastor under the bus. We all know that the reverse happened… Today, we found that he can fight back, and take a stand, without
calculation and in what is clearly a great amount of personal
difficulty and political pain. It’s what anyone should want in a
president. It makes me want to see him succeed more than ever.”
Ben Smith: “The shift in Obama’s approach to Jeremiah Wright is less the substance
– he criticized similar remarks before — but the personal tone.”
Glenn Reynolds: “Too little, too late, and too lawyerly.”

A new SurveyUSA poll in North Carolina shows Sen. Hillary Clinton dramatically closing the gap with Sen. Barack Obama in the final days before the primary.
Obama, who has led in the survey by roughly 10 points for most of the last two months, now leads by just 5 points, 49% to 44%.
Key finding: “White voters are key. Since January, Clinton had led among Carolina whites by 14, 19, 17, 22 and 23 points. But today, suddenly: 31. In the Research Triangle, Clinton is up 9 points, week-on-week; Obama is down 3; a net swing of 12 points to Clinton.”

A new Howey-Gauge Poll in Indiana shows Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. Hillary Clinton locked in a virtual dead heat before next week’s primary.
Hoosiers favor Obama over Clinton by the slim margin of 47% to 45%.
Among likely Democratic voters, the race is tied at 46%. The ultimate winner may be the candidate that can attract the most independents and Republican crossover voters.

A new Public Policy Polling survey in Indiana shows Sen. Hillary Clinton leading Sen. Barack Obama, 50% to 42%.
Key findings: “Clinton’s support is coming from the same groups that she usually does well with-
women (54-39), whites (54-38), and older voters (55-36), while Obama’s strongest performances, as usual, are with black voters (73-21) and voters under 30 (50-40).”
“It’s
not clear which candidate is benefiting more from Indiana’s open
primary. Clinton has a one point lead with Republicans, but Obama is up
52-37 with those voters who don’t identify with either party.”
