The overwhelming defeat of the Liberal Democratic Party in Japan’s upper house elections on Sunday, historic in its scale, brought about a drastic shift in the Japanese political landscape and sent a clear message to prime minister Abe Shinzo and his government. While media across the world analyze political fallout of the political shift, bloggers are echoing the message and demanding change.

A majority of New York voters — 53% — now believe that Gov. Eliot Spitzer (D) knew what his aides were doing when they arranged for State Police records of Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno’s (R) travels to be leaked to the media, according to a new Quinnipiac poll. Spitzer has denied knowing about the scheme.
As a result, Spitzer’s approval rating plunged to 48%, down from 60% last month.
Another interesting finding: While 50% of voters agree that Spitzer is a “steamroller,” only 18% say this tactic is working, while 53% say it contributes to legislative gridlock.
A new Siena New York Poll also finds a majority think Spitzer knew what his aides were doing.

Political Wire is looking for an intern, or if you prefer, a “part-time editorial assistant.” The time commitment should be relatively light, certainly an amount that could accommodate a full-time job or academic schedule. A passion for politics is a must. Living in the New York or Washington, D.C. area is ideal, but not mandatory.
The position will give you the chance to work on a widely-read and influential political website during what promises to be an exciting election season. Previous editorial assistants have parlayed the experience to work on presidential campaigns, U.S. Senate staffs, and various political publications.
To apply, please send your resume and a brief explanation of why you’re interested to the “tips” email address at the right.

A new SurveyUSA poll finds Sen. Norm Coleman (R-MN) defeats any one of three possible Democratic challengers in head-to-head matchups.
Coleman tops Al Franken (D), 49% to 42%., beats Mike Ciresi (D), 48% to 42%, and is ahead of Jim Cohen (D), 49% to 37%.
However, there are some serious areas of concern for the incumbent:
- Coleman’s support does not top 49% in any matchup.
- In an identical poll 5 months ago, Coleman defeated Franken by 22 points. Today, Coleman defeats Franken by 7.
- In an identical poll 5 months ago, Coleman defeated Ciresi by 23 points. Today, Coleman defeats Ciresi by 6 points.
- Coleman’s job approval has fallen into minus territory for the first time in 27 consecutive months of tracking.

Another book to add to my reading list: Seizing Destiny: How America Grew from Sea to Shining Sea by Pulitzer Prize winner Richard Kluger.
Kirkus: “This is a brilliant book, likely to be for some time the last word on how the American map evolved.”
Publishers Weekly: “Each chapter of this long, absorbing book is rewarding as Kluger meets the high standard set by his earlier work.”

How often we’ve heard that we malcontents in the left blogosphere–otherwise known as moonbats, libtards, and, in the covered-wagon days of the internet, idiotarians–are grievously lacking in courtesy, continence, civility, maturity, and all the other little dabs of do-ya that…
